Student housing is allocated by queue systems that reward time spent waiting, so apply the moment you have an offer rather than when you arrive. Some universities guarantee housing for international students, and that alone is a good reason to prefer them.
Check whether your university guarantees housing before you accept. It matters more than the ranking.

From November to February daylight is limited, and in the far north the sun does not properly rise for weeks. Most students find this harder than the cold. Getting outside during daylight, and a daylight lamp, both genuinely help.
Take vitamin D and go outside at lunchtime. Everyone here does both.

There is no set weekly limit for students on a residence permit, but your studies must remain the focus and your permit depends on making progress. After graduating you can apply to extend your permit to look for work or start a business.

Swedes can seem reserved at first and friendships take longer to form than in some countries. Student nations and societies exist precisely to solve this, and joining one in your first month is the single most effective thing you can do socially.

If you are staying a year or more you register for a personal identity number, and almost every service depends on it: a bank account, a phone contract, a gym membership, a doctor. Start the application immediately, because it takes time.
Sweden is nearly cashless. Get a card that works here before you fly.

Whose name: The money must be at your own disposal. A parent's account is usually not enough unless the funds are transferred to you.
About SEK 10,300 to 10,600 for each month of study, roughly ten months a year, plus the first tuition instalment paid in advance.

Requirements change and schools add their own. Always confirm the current figure with the embassy and the school before you open an account. Never use borrowed money or arranged documents: it is fraud and leads to refusal and bans. Figures reviewed 1 Oct 2026.

Protect your family
Warning signs, whoever you choose
Embassies regularly warn Vietnamese families about these. If you hear any of them, from us or anyone else, walk away.
- A guaranteed visa, or a "98 to 100% visa success" figure nobody can check. Only the embassy or immigration decides.
- Promises that part-time work will pay your tuition, or that you can earn back your costs quickly.
- Offers to "arrange" a savings book or financial documents for you. Fake documents are a crime and lead to bans.
- An all-inclusive price with no written breakdown, or new fees after you have paid a deposit.
- Pressure to sign or pay today, or a contract you cannot take home to read.
- No business licence, no real office address, or payment requested to a personal account.

When is the application deadline?
Mid January for the autumn intake, through a single national website. There is a smaller spring round in August.
Do I need Swedish?
Not for an English taught programme. Almost everyone speaks English well. Some Swedish helps enormously with making friends and finding work.
Do I have to pay tuition?
Students from outside the EU and EEA pay tuition. Scholarships are common and worth applying for at the same time as your programme.
Is housing really that hard to find?
In Stockholm and Gothenburg, yes. Apply the day you are accepted, and prefer universities that guarantee housing for international students.
