For parents

Your child studying in Japan: the essentials on one page

We wrote this page for parents: the real cost in VND, the money you must show, what work is allowed, how safe it is, the key dates and exactly what we charge. Figures are estimates; we confirm each one in writing before you pay anything.

What it costs

First year

VND 294M–458M

Paid before you fly

VND 123M–158M

Per month

VND 14M–25M

The savings you must show

Language school student visa Usually a parent sponsors. Immigration checks the sponsor's income certificate and job as well as the balance, so the income must plausibly explain the savings. VND 350M–525M≈ JPY 2,000,000–3,000,000 at least 6 months
University, vocational and graduate study A parent or close relative sponsors; their income and the source of the funds are checked. VND 438M–613M≈ JPY 2,500,000–3,500,000 at least 6 months

Open the savings book early and keep the money there. A large deposit just before applying, or money borrowed for the occasion, is the most common reason for refusal. Confirm the current figure with the embassy and the school.

Part-time work

Legal limit in term
28 hours a week in term
In school holidays
Up to 8 hours a day (40 a week) during the school's long holidays

You need "permission to engage in activity other than that permitted", usually granted at the airport on arrival. Nightlife and adult entertainment work is banned. Going over 28 hours is a common reason a visa is not renewed.

Please do not plan on part-time income to pay tuition or repay a loan. It usually covers part of the monthly living cost at best, and only after the first few months.

Safety and daily life

Japan has very low crime. The real risks are earthquakes and typhoons, and the pressure to work too many hours. Before departure we brief students on registration, insurance and disaster preparation.

After graduation: Graduates who find a job related to their studies can switch to a work visa. There is also a limited job-seeking status after graduation for vocational and university graduates.

Protect your family

Warning signs, whoever you choose

Embassies regularly warn Vietnamese families about these. If you hear any of them, from us or anyone else, walk away.

  • A guaranteed visa, or a "98 to 100% visa success" figure nobody can check. Only the embassy or immigration decides.
  • Promises that part-time work will pay your tuition, or that you can earn back your costs quickly.
  • Offers to "arrange" a savings book or financial documents for you. Fake documents are a crime and lead to bans.
  • An all-inclusive price with no written breakdown, or new fees after you have paid a deposit.
  • Pressure to sign or pay today, or a contract you cannot take home to read.
  • No business licence, no real office address, or payment requested to a personal account.
